“Embrace Tree,” shoulder-width feet parallel & 70/30 forward stance, right side view – 05/30/08 (Spring) Part 2 of “Embrace Tree” description See www.youtube.com for Part 1 of this description When practicing without a partner, I find the best way to internalize the correct position for a shoulder-width feet parallel “Embrace Tree” stance is to close both of my eyes, and feel my total body weight dropping through the center of each foot to the center of the earth. Establish correct gravity lines. Align all body structures correctly with gravity so bones higher up the body sit solidly on top of bones further below. Like a building built on a firm foundation. The ball & socket joints where the arms connect to the shoulders align with my hip-joints; my ball & socket hip-joints align with my knees; my knees align with my feet. All the “spring-like” joints sit on top of one other, supporting each other on the way up. Up and down gravity lines pass through all these interconnected, aligned joints, unifying them, and giving them spring-like shock absorber power. Gravity can either be my friend, or my enemy. If my body is not correctly aligned with gravity, I will lose my balance and tip over easily (without any external force being applied to my body). However, if all my body structures are correctly aligned with gravity, then I will be able to redirect incoming force through my flexible body into the earth, without being knocked over by the incoming force.
